Rode NT1A Studio Condenser Microphone

by Seth Weber on August 14, 2009

The RØDE NT1-A, one of the most amazing deals out there, such a great mic for such an affordable price! Also, the winner of the Electronic Musician 2004 Editor’s Choice Award. Rode claims that it is the world’s quietest studio condenser microphone with only 5 dBA of self-noise. This mic, from my experience, really is great. I’ve recorded Vocals, Acoustic Guitars, Electric Guitars, Pianos, and even used them as overheads on drums. My band (Modern Dissent) recorded our first album using almost exclusivly this mic on guitars and vocals.

The Positives:

  • Low self noise, only 5 dBA
  • Comes with shock mount and zip pouch
  • Ultra low noise, transformerless surface mount circuitry
  • Wide dynamic range
  • Gold plated output contacts
  • True condenser (externally biased)
  • Internal capsule shock mounting

The Negatives

  • I really have none

Sorry to those of you who like to hear the negatives, but I haven’t experienced anything negative with it and I searched all over other blogs and reviews about it, but still I only read good things. I even asked the best sound tech I know who uses this mic if he had any negatives and all he could come up with was (this is the exact message he sent me) “It’s not the warmest of mic’s. Really good top end. Breathes well. Stupid quiet. Just not what you want for “warming up” the sound. My opinion is you must have a couple in the mic locker.” I would agree with him, the more mics you can work with the better. They all sound different, so you don’t want to be confined to one mic, you want to be able to choose and vary your sound with different mics.

So I say for the price it is a great deal. Now, Does it Rock? Yes! If you need a good mic, whether you have alot of money or not, get this one!
