Holy Stain by Electro-Harmonix

by Seth Weber on July 24, 2009

If you listen to the type of music that I do, (Alternative and Expiremental) then you know that reverb is an effect that can really create a unique, smooth, great sound. I was looking about 6 months ago to get a reverb pedal.  The standard in guitar reverb pedals, in my opinion is “The Holy Grail” by Electro-Harmonix. When I was looking at these I also found EH’s new pedal, “The Holy Stain”, it does pretty much the same thing as the Grail, plus some other effects, and it cost only $100! It’s a great deal! You get 2 reverbs, Room and Hall, plus Pitch Shift and a Tremolo, which you can also combine with fuzz, drive and other tone settings.

The positives:
·   The reverbs sound great!
·   Both Pitch Shift and Tremolo are descent.
·   The Fuzz is a great feature.
·   If you get an expression pedal you can control the amount knob with it to do some really crazy stuff with the effects, particularly the Pitch Shift.

The negatives:
·   You can only use one effect at a time between the Reverbs, the Pitch Shift and Tremolo
·   The Pitch Shift doesn’t go a full octave from original pitch up or down, only a fifth each way.
·   With the Fuzz and Drive you can’t control the gain.(But they do still sound good)

Overall, as a multi effects pedal I give it a 7/10, but as a Reverb pedal with bonus effects (which is what it really is), I give it a 10/10, especially for the price.
So, Does it Rock? If you are looking for a good pedal to help you be creative, Yes, It Rocks!

I have own this pedal, got it on a trade on Craigslist for a Keeley Mod DS-1. Only probelm I have is the reverb is a bit too strong for my purposes. I usually keep amount all the way down at 7:00? O’clock. And the mix as 9:00. Seems like you don’t have much room turning it up from there before you go into the heavier wash territory. But it sounds good on the setting I get, I just have to be very when careful dialing it in. I can see this real washy reverb when turned up higher good for rockabilly and experimental, but not much else. Perhaps for another instrument it would work better for general playing, like an electric violin for instance.
The pitch shift is one of it’s best features in MHO. You can still get some very nice whammy effects with an expression peddle when the mix is turned up all the way. If you leave the mix at noon you get some nice harmony affects and chords ring out well. Leave the mix at noon and amount at noon and get a thick stereo chorus sound. Turn the mix all the way up and the amount around 11:00 and get a nice dropped D tuning sound with a nice bass boost.
I think the vibrato sounds great, very similar to a Deluxe Reverb, and I used to own an original.
And lastly, the color and tone works very nicely as a tone boost/limiter for my Champion 600 which of course doesn’t have a tone knob.
Overall, I realize it has its limitations, going from one effect to the next requires constant tweaking on the Mix and Amount knobs, and the reverb is a bit powerful. But the quality of sound that is there when tweaked properly makes this pedal shine. EHX is still one of the best pedal makers on the market and hold there own quite well with the sea of boutique competitors out there as far as inovation, quality and above all bang for the buck.
